Welcome to the Mayfield Lab

Mayfield Community Ecology Lab, 2024

The Mayfield Lab has recently located to the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia. Research in our group focuses on community ecology and the conservation of plant and insect communities in human altered environments. We work in tropical and subtropical rain forests and mediterranean, temperate and tropical grasslands on a diversity of plant and insect species

If you explore the research projects taking place in the Mayfield group, you will see that our interests are broad. However, all research in the group broadly aims to answer one of the following questions:

  • What processes are involved in the assembly and maintenance of natural plant and animal communities?
  • How does human-induced environmental change impact native plant and insect communities and their interactions?
  • How can we manage plant communities to maximize the conservation of native plant diversity and insect diversity?

To learn more about our current research projects please follow the “Research Projects” link at the top of the page.

If you are interested in joining the group as a student, please go to the “Prospective Students” page.

The Mayfield Ecology Lab acknowledge and respect all of the Traditional Owners of Australian lands, especially recognising those on the land on which we live and work: the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples of southern Victoria and the Yamatji of Western Australia.
